Plans unveiled for pub destroyed by arson

A PUB that was destoyed in an arson attack could be rebuilt after two possible investors came forward.

An exhibition on Monday to display plans for the King's Head pub in Morton attracted two couples who are willing to put in the approximate 100,000 investment needed to secure the pub's future.

Charles Wells Pub Company, which owns the building, hopes to revamp the pub with extra seating, improved decor and extended housing facilities above the pub.

Retail development manager Tim Smith said he was pleased by the response.

He said: "We had a couple of interested parties attend the exhibition. One couple are very local and they came along to see what was going to happen with it and to see what kind of investment was needed. The other couple are not so local, but currently have a pub and are looking to move.

"We are pleased that there is someone who is interested in taking it further."

Mr Smith said finding an investor was a lengthy process and that the exhibition was the first step. If an investor can't be found, the site in High Street, Morton could be sold for use as a pub or for other development such as housing.

He said: "We are a pub company and my ideal result is to find somebody local to run a decent quality pub restaurant. A good result for me is that the investment is in place by October and the pub is reopened by this time next year."

The proposals, which are subject to planning permission, are for the pub to be extended out over the former patio area creating an extra 35 seats. The former bar would also be made smaller to create extra space. The upstairs facilities would be extended to make the small flat into a three bedroom flat with a kitchen, bathroom and living room.

The pub was thriving under its previous leaseholder Roy Taylor until it was destroyed by fire last June. It has stood empty and dilapidated since then. Police say the fire was deliberately started in the early hours of June 18, but no arrests have been made.
