Police name grandmother and grandson who drowned at Holywell lake

POLICE have named the grandmother and her six-year-old grandson who drowned as Dawn Mullany and Laurence Mills.
Mrs Mullany, 71, from Castle Bytham, and Laurence, from Ketton, are believed to have been feeding the ducks at the lake in Holywell, near Castle Bytham, when the tragedy occurred on Thursday.
Formal identification took place this afternoon (Monday).
Laurence’s mother raised the alarm at 9.20pm on Thursday because he had not returned home, having spent the previous night at his grandmother’s home.
Police, fire crews and an RAF search and rescue helicopter searched for them. They found Mrs Mullany’s car at the lake and recovered her body at 10.45pm. The rescue team tried to resuscitate her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Laurence’s body was found in the lake at 4am on Friday.
Laurence, who was known as Laurie, was a pupil at Ketton Primary School.
In a statement, headteacher Amanda Rogers said: “The staff and governors of Ketton Primary School wish to extend their heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Laurie’s family. Laurie was a popular, happy and vibrant member of our school community. We shall all miss him so much.
“We will do all in our power to support the family and all those who are so shocked, distressed and grieving.”
Mrs Rogers said assemblies had been held this morning (Monday).
She said: “Staff will be able to support children on an individual basis, with help and advice from a bereavement specialist. We will also set aside an area in the front playground for floral tributes.”
Mrs Rogers said that staff, children, parents and carers were “deeply distressed” and she asked that their privacy be respected.
Flowers have also been left at the scene, offering condolences.
