Princess Anne plants a tree at Burghley
THE Princess Royal has planted the first tree of a wood which will mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee.
The princess was joined yesterday by Year 5 and 6 pupils from Ketton Primary School as she planted a wild service tree, or chequers tree, in the grounds of Burghley House.
The tree will be the first of 23,650 in Burghley’s new Diamond Wood, which will be one of 60 planted around the country to celebrate the diamond jubilee.
Speaking after the planting, Princess Anne said the new wood would be important for future generations to come.
She said: “This is not just about planting trees, it is about schools and the learning process that come with these woods.
“It is a great way of celebrating longevity, tradition and continuity. It seems to be an entirely appropriate way to celebrate the jubilee.”
Arriving by helicopter, Princess Anne spent an hour talking to sponsors of the project and the numerous children who planted a tree to start the new wood.
She was helped by Georgina McLeod, project head at the Woodland Trust, who said: “This is the pinnacle of the project. One million children will plant a tree. It is about getting children reconnected with nature.”
Princess Anne thanked Burghley House director Miranda Rock and the Burghley estate for their support.
