Public forum for people over 60

AN independent forum enabling people over the age of 60 to have their say on issues affecting them is taking place on Thursday this week.

The Rutland Over Sixties Engagement group, known as ROSE, will meet at Voluntary Action Rutland, off Barleythorpe Road in Oakham at 2pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend and organisers of the event have arranged for Spire Homes' head of supported housing services, Carol Underwood, to show up.

Spire Homes took over Rutland County Council's housing stock last year and people will get the chance to quiz the firm about issues affecting them.

Talks are also expected to be provided from The Stroke Association and Supra, which is a company that helps with home aids and external key boxes for elderly residents.

Rutland County Council, which is backing the public forum, is urging residents to come along to the meeting.

Adult social care portfolio holder Coun Hugh Rees (Con) will chair the meeting.

He said: "This is a lively group of individuals who are looking to discuss key issues for the over sixties in Rutland and act as a voice for over sixties in the county.

"ROSE is always looking for new members who feel that they could get actively involved in the topics we discuss."

The Rutland Over Sixties Engagement group was set up in spring 2009 as an independent forum to enable people over 60 living in Rutland to address specific issues with local agencies and organisations and look at areas of interest.

To date, topics covered have included active lifestyle opportunities, transport in and around the county, planning for long-term care, domestic adaptations and appliances, as well as home safety and security.

The group's meetings are free and open to everyone over the age of 60 living in Rutland, or their representatives.

Rutland Community Spirit is responsible for the administration of the group.

Its project manager Sue Renton said she hoped people would come along, with the chance to engage with Spire Homes, among other issues on the agenda.

She added: "Rutland residents are all welcome, particularly those over 60 and tenants of Spire housing, and are encouraged to come and meet their new landlords and address questions to them."

The meeting, on Thursday, March 4, will run from 2pm to 4pm.
