Public backs plans to offer more services at hospital

HOSPITAL bosses have won the support of people in Rutland for plans to provide more services in the county's only hospital.

Views about proposed changes to Rutland Memorial Hospital in Oakham have been analysed by a team at Loughborough University and out of the 280 people who responded, 75 per cent support the proposals.

Health bosses hope to create a care centre at the hospital site which would be led by doctors from Oakham Medical Practice doctors, which could be incorporated into the hospital, and GPs from across the county.

It would include patient beds and a wide range of services.

The aim is to provide more healthcare closer to home.

NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland launched a four-month consultation period on its plans in June.

Mercury readers submitted their views which were passed on to the trust and more than 80 people attended a meetiong about the plans in Oakham in September.

Chief executive of NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland, Catherine Griffiths, said: "We are pleased to be able to publish the analysis of feedback from our public consultation.

"We will now take this into consideration, along with issues of clinical safety and affordability, as we finalise our proposals for the future of community health services."

People have called for out of hours and accident and emergency services at Oakham, an eye clinic and more focus on preventative care. Concerns have also been raised about car parking at the site.

Next month the health trust will publish its final recommendations and then develop detailed plans for the hospital.
