Parishioners at a village church are pulling together to raise funds to repair the roof after a survey found a number of problems.
St Andrew’s Church, in Witham-on-the-Hill has been told it needs to find about £60,000 to repair its leaking roof.
The quinquennial survey in September revealed major problems which will require the replacing of the lead on the south aisle roof as well as many of its ancient timbers.
In addition the five-yearly inspection found some damage to the west wall, believed to have been caused by an earthquake of a few years ago.
The Rev Andrew Hawes, who has been the vicar at the village church for 23 years, said: “When it rains, a lot of water comes in one side. The work has got to be done and the longer we leave it the worse it will get and the more expensive.
“The Parochial Church Council is willing to empty the bank to get the project going but that would still leave us looking for £25,000.”
Volunteers from the church have sent flyers around the village appealing for donations and have had an overwhelming response.
The Rev Hawes said: “Up to now it has been amazing. People have been so generous.”
The major fund raising programme began with clothes being collected for cash which raised £124.
Early last month parishioners of all ages gathered together to raise funds at a Christmas fair at Witham Hall School.
The fair had many stalls selling a variety of items including cakes, teas, crafts, toys and bric-a-brac, books, lucky dip, tombola, sweets, raffle, jewellery and a lucky square draw and, including donations, raised £1,088.
A direct appeal to parishioners earlier this month has already produced an amazing £1,400 with more promised.
Anyone who would like to make a donation towards the repairs should contact churchwarden Ann Taylor on 01778 590433 or Ian Lawrie on 01780759159.
