Pupil excluded after being found with knife on school bus
AN 11-year-old boy has been excluded from school after being found in possession of a knife.
Uppingham Community College punished the youngster after a teacher removed him from a school bus which was taking pupils home.
The pupil, who had been in school that day, was found to be in possession of a one-inch antique fruit knife.
The incident happened on June 16 and the teacher acted after being tipped off.
There is no indication that the other pupils on the bus were aware of what was happening and the school has stated that the youngster had not threatened anyone.
He will be returning to school in September.
Headteacher Jan Turner said the youngster had found the knife in a garage and did not have a reason for bringing it to school but did not have a malicious intention.
In a statement Mrs Turner said: "The pupil has since been excluded from Uppingham Community College, a decision fully supported by his parents who are naturally extremely disappointed with his behaviour.
"We are lucky that this kind of incident is virtually unheard of in Rutland but our response sends out a very clear message that bringing a knife into school will not be tolerated and will result in immediate exclusion.
"I am pleased that our students brought this matter to the attention of staff in a prompt and mature manner as this shows they are also not prepared to tolerate such behaviour.
"I would also like to thank my staff for their quick and effective response.
"I am happy to meet with any parent who wishes to discuss this matter further but I firmly believe this incident has been dealt with in the right way."
