Rallying cry as skatepark plan faces final hurdle

The Maverick Industries design for a new skatepark in Stamford

The Maverick Industries design for a new skatepark in Stamford

Skatepark campaigners have called on people to support them one more time as they look to jump the final hurdle in the planning process.

Plans to build a concrete skatepark on the Recreation Ground in Stamford were approved by South Kesteven District Council in October last year.

Stamford Town Council, which submitted the plans, and the Stamford Skatepark Committee, which raised £150,000 for the project, were hopeful work on the new park would start shortly after.

But after six weeks waiting for the district council to draw up planning conditions, it was revealed that a detailed management plan would need to be submitted as a separate application before any work could begin.

Council officers asked for the management plan after raising concerns about the disturbance the park could cause to nearby residents.

The plan has now been submitted and will be considered by members of the development control committee at a future meeting.

Skatepark committee chairman Marc Stanier has called on supporters to rally together one last time.

He said: “The worry is that people will think we were given permission back in October and everything is going ahead.

“It took the district council six weeks to give us the conditions.

“From then we have been working with our acoustic consultants, the town council and the objectors to get this management plan into place.”

Mr Stanier has urged all those in favour of the skatepark to comment on the management plan application when it appears on the district council website.

He added: “I would be very surprised and disappointed, with the amount of consultation we have done, if it didn’t go through.”

The management plan can be seen at www.southkesteven.gov.uk/planning, where comments for and against can be left.
