Record attempt rower returns to starting line

A ROWER attempting a record crossing of the Indian Ocean has been forced to return to shore after 10 days.

Sarah Outen has hit problems during her attempt to become the first woman to row solo across the Indian Ocean from Australia to Mauritius.

Sarah, 23, of Buckingham Road, Oakham, had to be towed back to Fremantle in Perth.

An electrical fault on board her boat Serendipity meant Sarah had to return to shore for essential repairs. It came after a week of troubles when strong currents swept her off course.

Sarah said: "I couldn't decide whether I was glad or not that it happened so close to the start but once ashore and munching merrily on all things tasty and fresh I was very happy to be back in Fremantle getting everything shipshape.

"The electrics are being tweaked and I will be looking to head out again as soon as I can. Meanwhile I will restock on fresh stuff, do all my washing and catch up with e-mails again."

Sarah has taken on the challenge in memory of her father Derek who died suddenly in 2006. She is raising money for Arthritis Care in his memory.
