Residents meet MP over homes concerns

MP ALAN Duncan has met 40 residents in Uppingham over their concerns about the future of development of the town.

Rosemary and Michael Tolkien hosted the residents' meeting on Friday to discuss Rutland County Council's latest policy for future developments in the county.

Last summer the council published its vision for what Rutland's development priorities should be during the next 20 years. A public consultation on its findings ended this week. Ideas included 1,000 new homes to the north west of Oakham and 250 new homes to the north west of Uppingham.

Mrs Tolkien, of Firs Avenue in Uppingham, hosted a meeting for 40 residents, councillors and MP Alan Duncan on Friday last week.

She said: "We are concerned about the bigger picture for Uppingham, not just the personal disruption to our lives that would result if 250 new homes were built in the town. This includes worries about the town's infrastructure and parking and the effect a possible 25 per cent increase in the population would make to the character of the town."

The final version of the core strategy will be submitted to the secretary of state in 2010. It will form a key part of the council's Local Development Framework which is the basis for all planning policies.

After Friday's meeting Mr Duncan said: "Rutland can and should grow but only after proper consideration is given to the rural sensitivities of the area.

"More houses to the west of Uppingham need to be built with strict conditions about practical amenities around it. This is in its early stages and I will help all residents get their views across to the council as they draw up their plans."
