Residents protest at council office over cut-price Stamford car parking offer
More than 50 people annoyed at a cut-price offer for car parking turned out for a short protest today (Monday).
South Kesteven District Council is offering cut prices at its long stay car parks in Wharf Road and Cattle Market and its short stay car parks in North Street, St Leonard’s Street, Scotgate and Bath Row for either three or six months while it comes up with a plan for residents parking schemes.
Residents are concerned that once wardens start issuing fixed penalty fines on Monday, December 3, they will be penalised for parking outside their own home.
But they are annoyed that the cost of the temporary parking permits differs between the car parks and that there is a limited number of places available which are being issued on a first come first served basis.
More than 50 residents protested at the district council’s offices in Maiden Lane, Stamford, at about 4.45pm today.
Steve Marsh, of Broad Street, Stamford, gave a speech inside the offices while staff carried on with their work. The residents left when the office closed at 5pm and were in Maiden Lane for another 15 minutes.
Mr Marsh said: “We are trying to raise awareness of our plight. South Kesteven District Council has done all it can but it is too little too late really.
“What we need is for Lincolnshire County Council and South Kesteven District Council to work together to come up with a solution.
“We have had a good turnout today, particularly at short notice, but what we need now is for people to get in touch with their councillor and voice their concerns.”
People at the protest were frustrated that wardens acting on behalf of the county council are due to start issuing tickets before a residents’ scheme is in place.
Jenny Fitzpatrick, who lives in St Leonard’s Street, said: “It is going to be a nightmare. I don’t want to be walking from the Cattle Market car park all the way up to St Leonard’s Street.
“As a trader I think it’s ridiculous that it is going to be Stamford residents clogging up the car parks instead of visitors.
“We just want the county council and the district council to sit down with us and come up with a reasonable solution.”
