Two lifelong Liverpool football fans have completed a cycle ride to raise money for the families affected by the Hillsborough disaster.

Steven Pope, 24, of Aberdeen Close, Stamford and his brother Andy, 19, who is a student at the University of Liverpool, cycled from Hillsborough in Sheffield to Anfield in Liverpool in a single day.

The brothers organised the ride shortly after the Hillsborough inquiry report came out.

They rode a mile for each of the 96 football fans who were crushed to death at a football game in 1989.

Steven said: “We have of course found the events of the past few weeks very upsetting and wanted to do something for the families in their next steps.”

“It was a difficult but rewarding challenge.

After 12 hours on the road the pair made it to the Anfield at 10.15pm, where they left a scarf with the word Justice embroidered on it, at the memorial in Anfield Road.

The money raised by the brothers will be split between the The Hillsborough Family Support Group and The Hillsborough Justice Campaign, which is continuing the fight for justice for the 96 people who died.

Steven said: “There is undoubtedly a lot more to be done and we obviously feel that now the truth is finally out it is time for justice to be done.

“We appreciate that this is by no means the end and we wanted to support the relatives in our own small way. A little bit pain on the weekend was well worth
it.

“We didn’t care how long it would take us to get to Liverpool, we were just determined to finish it and raise as much as we could.”

The brothers are so far about half way towards reaching their desired fundraising total of
£960.
