Rutland Befrienders appeals for volunteers to help elderly people

A group that offers company and support for the elderly in the county is calling for volunteers.

The Rutland Befrienders, run by Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland, is in need of more people to come forward and help with its service.

Members of the group visit people over the age of 65 in their homes and provide companionship for those feeling lonely and isolated.

Rutland Befrienders has 21 volunteers but more are needed due to its growing waiting list of clients which now stands at about half a dozen.

The group is managed by Sue Bamber, of Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland.

She said: “We’re desperate for volunteers to join the group. We offer comfort and support for those feeling isolated due to ill health or bereavement and we look to alleviate their loneliness.

“It can be very rewarding to help those in need of company and friendship, and knowing that you’re making a difference to their lives. Our volunteers do find it very rewarding.

“We have a growing waiting list of clients so any help we can get would be much appreciated.”

Those looking to help the group will have to be able to offer their time for a maximum of one hour on a weekly basis.

The group covers the whole of Rutland and has been running for more than eight years.

To become a volunteer or to find out more about Rutland Befrienders, call Sue on 01572 770324, or volunteer Wendy Bye on 01572 822171.
