Rutland County Council is best for recycling rates
Residents in Rutland have reason to be proud after the county was placed top of a list of local authorities for its rate of recycling.
Rutland County Council is the best unitary council and the seventh best overall in the country when it comes to recycling according to figures released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The rate of recycling in the county stands at 61.3 per cent.
Coun Martyn Pocock, who is in charge of environment issues for Rutland County Council, said: “This is really good news for Rutland and the whole community can be very proud of the excellent take-up of the council’s recycling service.
“Recycling is clearly good for the environment but is also financially beneficial. Every tonne of waste we send to landfill costs us money so it’s important we keep this to a minimum.”
Most homes in Rutland have a grey recycling bin which is collected every two weeks. Since the introduction of the kerbside collection for recycling in early 2008, the rate of recycling has increased from 29 per cent to 61 per cent.
Coun Pocock added: “Our kerbside collections were first introduced in April 2008 and since then we’ve continually listened to customer feedback to make the service as good as possible.
“We will continue to move with the times and provide an efficient and convenient recycling service for our residents and look forward to many future successes.”
