Rutland’s new transport scheme could be up and running by summer
A new travel scheme that will bring a boost to tourism and employment in Rutland could be launched by summer if plans are given the go-ahead.
The project, which has been named Travel4Rutland, will include a tourism bus, a workplace shuttle bus and a new transport interchange station in John Street, Oakham.
The tourism bus, which will be called ShoreLink, will link Rutland Water with Oakham and Uppingham and operate seven days a week. An unlimited day ticket would cost £3.50 for adults and £2.50 for children.
The workplace shuttle bus, which will link Corby and Stamford to South Luffenham, and Melton and Stamford to Oakham, will run early in the morning and late at night to benefit those living in rural areas. A weekly pass will cost £15.
As part of the scheme, the current interchange station in John Street will undergo improvements.
These include redeveloping the toilets, installing wi-fi, building bike storage and hire facilities, a tourist information area and making developments to accommodate more buses. The plans were drawn up following results from a public survey. If approved, the work will be completed by 2015.
The scheme is being funded thanks to a successful £4m transport bid for Government funding in June last year.
Councillors have been asked to approve the plans at a Rutland County Council cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
Rutland County Council leader Coun Roger Begy (Con) said: “This is a very exciting time for those living in Rutland and visitors to the county.
“The whole scheme is a tremendous opportunity and it will be great to have it running for the summer.
“The great thing about the tourism bus is that not only will it link all our sites and towns, people will also be able to take their bikes aboard.
“The workplace bus will be very important for employers. We’ve got a good work force in Rutland and the bus will support businesses and help people living in rural areas get to work.”
The bus routes could be up and running in May if plans are given the green light next week.
Centrebus has been chosen as the potential bus company to operate the services.
Deputy council leader Coun Terry King (Con) said: “The plans are all really good news.
“The interchange in Oakham will be a big improvement on existing facilities and there will be more room for buses.”
