A group of men have taken on a slimming challenge as they try and raise funds to support maintenance work on a church roof.
Eight men from the Deepings made it their new year’s resolution to shed a few pounds and raise a few more in support of St Guthlac’s Church in Church Street, Market Deeping.
Led by church rector the Rev Philip Brent, the group weighed in for the first time on January 6.
Since then they have been collecting sponsorship and trying to lose weight for a good cause.
The Rev Brent said: “We have one or two projects for the church tower we are hoping to raise funds for.
“The idea was that some men should get together and get sponsored to lose weight. Some people have sponsored us by the pound, some have pledged a total amount.
“The response has been brilliant. I have had in the region of about £400 pledged myself. I should think the others have got a similar amount.”
The Rev Brent hopes to lose about a stone and a half by the time of the final weigh-in on March 31.
He added: “Some are a bit bigger than me and some are not but we tried to make the group representative across the board.”
The men are collecting money for the St Guthlac’s tower project, which aims to raise funds to build a new disabled toilet and kitchenette in the church.
The church, which dates back to the 15th century, is in need of some modernisation.
The Rev Brent said: “We want to make it more accessible for more people. It will cost about £60,000. We are about a third of the way towards that so far.
“The town council has been very supportive of us and have given us a grant. The whole community feels this is something they would like to see in the church.”
E-mail Rev Brent to sponsor the men.
