Slideshow: Flooding reported across the area

Heavy rain and melting snow has caused flooding across the area.

Flood alerts are in place for the River Welland and River Nene.

Residents battled to stop rising waters flooding St Mary’s Church in Essendine yesterday (Sunday).

Church council secretary Katy Parkinson said: “Some people spotted it quickly and ran in to get the carpets and kneelers up.

“We sealed the front and back doors with sandbags and bales of straw. But the water came in from underneath the church. There is a large aquifer underneath the village.

“The water has drained away from inside so it’s just a muddy mess now.”

The 900-year-old church has flooded before, but not since 1998.

Reader Steve Croxton sent in pictures of water surrounding the church. He said: “Unfortunately we could not hold the water back as it was coming from underground springs.”

The Meadows in Stamford has flooded.

Flooding has also been reported in Carlby, pictured, Edenham, Corby Glen, Folkingham, North Witham, Langham and Creeton.
