Speed bumps cause lorry to shed its load

QUESTIONS are being asked again about speed bumps in Uppingham after a lorry shed its load of meat this week.

It is the second time a lorry has lost its load on the notorious London Road blighted by four speed bumps and a mini roundabout.

The most recent incident happened on Wednesday morning at about 7.30am by the junction of Springback Way and Station Road.

As the lorry negotiated the bumps, pallets containing tonnes of pork and bacon spilled out on to the road, causing chaos to early morning traffic.

It is believed the back doors of the vehicle came open.

Residents say the incident only highlights what they regularly have to put up with.

They say noise is worse since the traffic calming measures have been put in place.

Simeon Hawkins of Old School Mews, Uppingham, is particularly concerned there could be a fatal accident on the road.

He remains unimpressed with the current traffic calming measures.

He said: "Speed bumps have not helped.

"New lorries have air suspension on the cabs, a lot have air suspended trailers as well and most have air suspended feet for the drivers.

"What that means is drivers' and their loads don't feel the effect of the speed bumps.

"They don't need to slow down. The only thing that slows down are the cars.

"A lot of people don't recognise there is a roundabout on the road. Somebody could be wiped out one day."

Speaking of Wednesdays incident, Les Hoare of Springback Way said: "It is so frustrating. I am just glad I was not in a car behind that lorry when it happened."
