A man who attributes his good health to having a regular whisky and lemonade celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday.

Popular Bert Blake, of Kesteven Drive, Market Deeping shared the day with more than 50 members of his family before celebrating again with friends from the Deepings, where he has lived for 50 years, on Monday.

Bert, who received a card from the Queen, said: “It’s a special day but I am very lucky to have had many special days in my life. It feels alright, I have been here for a long time and experienced a lot.”

Bert is a member of the Deeping Age UK lunch club and on Monday the members of the group came together for a celebration at the Joan Wake Close community centre.

Despite being the oldest member of the lunch club, a sprightly Bert walked around the room to greet each of his guests 40 to 50 guests.

Temporary co-ordinator of the lunch club, Deanna Birkitt said: “He is such a lovely man and in such great shape for his age and so sharp.”

Bert, who was a pattern maker by trade and owned his own foundry, is an active member of the Freemasons as a member of the St Guthlac Lodge and St Pega Lodge.

Through the Freemasons he met best friend Jeff Stocking, 83, who was celebrating with him.

Jeff said: “He is a great man and the best friend I have ever had. Wherever he goes I go.”
