Staff sign up for eco travel scheme

STAFF at Rutland County Council are doing their bit to help rid Oakham town centre of congestion.

The council launched a Travel 4 Rutland scheme on Monday at its offices in Catmose Street to encourage staff to use public transport, cycle or share lifts to work.

Staff wanting to share cars can use an online system to look for colleagues along their route and contact them. They can then park in specially allocated spaces in the council car park.

It is hoped this will free up spaces for members of the public to use in car parks in the town.

Portfolio holder for regulatory services at Rutland County Council Janine Rodger (Con) said: "This is a really great scheme which I fully support.

"I hope we will be able to reduce our carbon footprint as a council.

"We have had a great response from staff, with many having already signed up to take part in the car share scheme."

The council has also invested in pool bikes with safety equipment to reduce staff mileage to nearby meetings.

A low-cost pool car has also been allocated for car sharers who need to travel further to meetings.

Coun Rodger added: "The pool bikes and car are available on a booking system, which will encourage staff to make use of the low-cost travel options that we have put in place.

"The scheme not only aims to reduce our carbon footprint, but I hope it will also help our staff to save money in these difficult economic times."

The scheme forms part of the council's travel plan for Rutland.
