Stamford Civic Society’s project to restore sundial is well underway
A new sundial could be in place by Easter after a successful project to remove the previous one.
Stamford Civic Society won £42,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project in partnership with All Saints’ Church to restore the sundial on the church and replace it with a new sundial to mark the society’s 50th anniversary.
The old sundial was removed from its position on the parapet overlooking Red Lion Square in January and was sent away for restoration. It has now been returned and is inside the church by the north door, where it will stay.
The iron pins which secured the sundial had rusted, splitting the stone. Cement was used to repair the damage on two separate occasions in the late 19th century, which damaged the sundial further.
A new sundial will take pride of place on the church and work is underway to carve and paint it.
The civic society hopes to have the new sundial in place before Easter.
The society is also working on boards which will be displayed at the church and will detail the sundial project.
