A woman is proud to call herself a loser after shedding the pounds to take a slimming award.

Sharon Monahan has been crowned Oakham Slimming World’s Greatest Loser 2014 after dropping 3st3½lbs.

The super slimmer bagged the prize, which was awarded to the member of Oakham’s 7.30pm Slimming World group who has lost the most weight, and says her weight loss has changed her life.

Sharon, 48, from Woodland View, said: “I feel like a new woman since losing weight. In fact, I look so different that people who I haven’t seen for a while often can’t believe I’m the same person.

“But for me it’s the change on the inside that’s been the biggest difference. I’m happier, healthier and lots more confident now.”

Sharon had a BMI of 34.5 when she joined the group, which is run by Sheryl Kearney, a year ago. She had had enough and did not want to keep running the risk of getting diabetes like members of her family.

After cutting out the chocolates and crisps and reverting to lean meats and vegetables, she dropped from 16st3.5lbs to 13st. Her BMI has reduced to a healthier 27.9.

Sharon, who works at RPC Containers in Oakham, said: “I always tried to shrink into the background and avoid drawing attention to myself. I’d pretend it didn’t bother me that I was bigger than most other people, but that was far from the truth. But with the help of Sheryl, who has been amazing, and fantastic support from my husband Seamus, I managed to lose the weight. I haven’t got a target weight but I’m not ready to stop yet.”

Her husband Seamus added: “Sharon’s been fantastic. I’m so proud of her.”

Sharon will now compete in Slimming World’s national awards.
