Team-bulding teachers

TEACHERS became a huge team of volunteers to help refurbish Stamford Corn Exchange.

Twenty-four staff from Stamford Junior School spent Monday morning painting and cleaning the theatre complex in Broad Street.

Monday was a holiday for pupils but a team-building day for staff. Paul Wiggin, the school's continuing professional development leader, said: "We have wonderful staff who are keen to be involved in community projects. They are very able and are willing to do all sorts of things.

"It is a wonderful opportunity for us to get involved and for us to establish closer links with the community."

Year 3 teacher Anita Phillips said: "It is great thing for us to do. It is a bit of fun as a team-building activity, and it is nice to do something for the community and do a bit of good."

The school has also sponsored a seat at the theatre at a cost of 150.

Paul organised the day after it was suggested by Christine Norton, one of the many volunteers who have taken part in the mammoth project to refurbish the Corn Exchange.

Christine, who works as a classroom assistant in the school's reception class, said: "This number of people for a morning is a lot of man hours and it makes a huge difference."

Her husband Nigel, a volunteer duty manager at the Corn Exchange, said: "It is fantastic to see so many people here working and means a lot of work craftsmen won't have to do. Volunteers save us a lot of money and a lot of time."

He said the project was progressing well. "Work has started on the changing rooms and there will also be a disabled lift for access from the changing rooms," he said. "We are hoping they will be usable by September."

Donations and fundraising have led to a revamped theatre with a capacity for 400 people. The work on the changing rooms was funded by an 80,000 grant from the Lottery.

Although work is still going on, the Corn Exchange is open for productions and Stamford Amateur Musical Society will put on My Fair Lady from Tuesday, April 29.
