Team behind Riverside bid for £20k grant

A BID will be submitted today for up to £20,000 to run a month-long cultural festival.

The directors of Stamford's Riverside Festival decided at a meeting on Thursday last week to go ahead with applying for the funding to run an event next summer in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics.

There is a pot of about 100,000 available from the East Midlands Regional Group for the 2012 for events in Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland.

The Riverside directors want to run a series of events under the banner The Riverside Olympiad Festival. This would include a fringe festival, art workshops and a dedicated website featuring arts and making the best use of the internet.

These will take place in June leading up to a one-day music festival on the Meadows, which would take place on the first Saturday in July, similar to previous Riverside Festivals but with more focus on live acts.

Jenny Collins, who is one of the directors, said she was hopeful they would be in with a chance of getting some cash.

She said: "We decided this funding was too good an opportunity to miss but we know there's a lot of projects applying for some money.

"We think we have got a good idea and we have a good track record so we are hopeful that will go a long way in our favour. This is trying to bring in lots of different elements so everyone can take part in some way."

The directors expect the events to cost about 100,000 to stage and Jenny said it would cover the rest with sponsorship and other grant applications.

A public meeting was held two weeks ago for groups, which would be interested in helping stage the event, to come forward. These groups including the Stamford Festival Association, the Corn Exchange Theatre and drama and music groups, would be represented on sub-committees which would be responsible for each part of the festival.
