Teenager breaks leg in makeshift ski accident
A TEENAGER who was airlifted to hospital after an accident on makeshift skis has had two rods placed in his broken leg.
Josh Westgate, 16, broke the tibia and fibula bones in his right leg after coming off a pair of makeshift skis near his home in Glen Close, Little Bytham, on Friday, last week.
The Robert Manning College pupil was enjoying the snow with his uncle James and sister Elouise, eight, when the accident happened at about 3.30pm.
The family were waiting for a sledge to arrive when went outside and decided to make their own from a McDonald's tray larded with vegetable fat.
When the tray broke Mr Westgate, 33, thought the pieces would make good skis and successfully travelled about 15 yards.
But when Josh had a go he fell off and broke his leg.
Josh said he first lost his left 'ski' and then the right one as he tried to put his foot on it but fell onto his leg.
Josh said: "It was so painful I knew I had broken it."
Paramedics later arrived on the back of a 4x4 and called an air ambulance which rushed him to hospital. On Saturday he underwent an operation and was back home on Wednesday.
The youngster thanked the passers-by who gave him their hats and coats as he lay shivering in the snow waiting for help to arrive.
Josh said: "It is so painful I would rather be at school and I never thought I would live to see the day I would say that."
His mum Emma, 35, has also praised the paramedics.
She said: "They were absolutely fantastic, both the ground crew and the air ambulance."
