Two schoolboys showed great maturity in using pedal power to generate hundreds of pounds for Cancer Research UK.
William Alexander and Robert Case, both 15 and pupils at Catmose College, raised more than £780 for the charity by cycling around Rutland, and collecting sponsorship money from family, friends and staff at their school.
The pair used their initiative to raise funds for the cause as part of their volunteer award for their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award, which they have now completed following their efforts.
The friends were joined on their journey by Robert’s dad Anthony and his brother Tom.
Robert, who lives in Hambleton, said: “We raised £786 between us, which is more than we thought we possibly could.
“It’s great to have been able to make so much money for such a good charity.”
William, who is from Ashwell, said: “It was hard work, but really rewarding.
“As the final part of our Duke of Edinburgh bronze award, we decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK as we feel it is a charity that is close to people’s hearts.”
The boys presented the money to staff at the Cancer Research UK shop in Oakham on Wednesday.
Shop manager Wendy Henderson has voiced how grateful she was for the pair’s donation.
She said: “It was such a surprise to us. I had no idea they were doing it until they had done the ride and brought the money into us.
“For two young boys to raise that much is amazing. They should be recognised for what they have done. It’s such a large amount.”
The money will be sent to the charity’s head office to be put towards a range of work, including scientific research.
