The Local has scooped two awards recognising its success as the people’s paper.

The Local received the innovation award and was named small weekly title of the year at the Johnston Press Awards.

The ceremony, hosted by chief executive officer Ashley Highfield, was held at Oulton Hall in Leeds last night (Thursday) and 44 awards were handed out recognising some of the terrific achievements of titles and individuals across the company.

The Local was named winner of the innovation award with The Star, based in Sheffield, named the runner-up. Mr Highfield and representatives from category sponsor Endava presented the award on stage to Local reporter Kerry Coupe and sports writer John Evely.

The paper was also awarded small weekly title of the year with the Deeside Piper named the runner-up. That award was presented by Mr Highfield and editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post Jeremy Clifford.

The Local was relaunched in November as the people’s paper - the first in the country to give readers the chance to have their say directly on the pages of their paper.

The titles that won in the small weekly, the large weekly and the daily categories were also put forward for the Johnston Press Title of the Year and The Local was given a special mention by the judges. The overall award went to The Gazette (Blackpool).

Group editor Mark Edwards said: “We are delighted to receive the awards, which are testament to a lot of hard work and some great support from the community in Bourne.

“We are very proud of The Local and we would like to thank everyone in Bourne who has been so supportive and so encouraging of what we are trying to achieve in the last few months.”
