The Meadows in Stamford will not be used for this year’s Mid-Lent Fair

The biggest rides at the Mid-Lent Fair will not be coming to Stamford after it was decided The Meadows is too waterlogged.

The fair will still go-ahead on Bath Row, Castle Dyke, Sheep Market, Red Lion Square and Broad Street but The Meadows, which is usually home to three or four of the biggest rides, will not be used this year.

There is nowhere else suitable for the rides.

The decision was taken by Stamford Town Council and the fair organisers during a site visit on Thursday, after “unprecedented rainfall this year”.

Chairman of the town council’s amenities committee Mike Exton said it was disappointing but the most important thing was preserving The Meadows for future use.

The town council is hoping to carry out work to protect The Meadows including reseeding it and laying a plastic membrane at the entrances.

Mayor of Stamford Bob Sandall will officially open the fair on Monday, March 11 at 6pm by the waltzers.

The fair is open between 4pm and 11pm until Saturday, March 16.

Roads will be closed from 5pm on Saturday until Sunday, March 17.
