The Plough in Greetham wins Camra pub of the season

A REAL ale group which formed last year has presented its first award to a village pub.

The Rutland branch of the Campaign to Protect Real Ale, known as Camra, voted The Plough in Greetham as its pub of the season.

Members nominated their favourite pubs during the winter months and the Greetham business came out on top.

Camra branch chairman Graham Proud, of Uppingham Road, Preston, said: "The Plough is a good all-round pub and won by a clear majority. It has a good range of unusual beers including Timothy Taylor Golden which is hard to find around here and Ian runs all the pub games and quizzes.

"The Plough is just a really good community pub."

Landlord Ian Smeeton was given the award last week. He said: "I was very proud to receive the award to recognise the achievements of myself and the staff. It is particularly great to be a part of history by receiving the first ever award given out by the Rutland branch."

Mr Smeeton, 44, has run the pub for 10 years with his wife Kath, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere as well as being a hub of community life. The Plough has two quiz teams, a dominoes team, two petanque sides and hopes to revive its darts team this year.

Camra members are now putting together nominations for the spring pub of the season and working on a Rutland pub magazine.
