Police are hunting a thief who stole a diamond ring from a jewellery shop before being hit by a car while running away.

The man stole the £3,250 ring from F Hinds in High Street, Stamford, at about 2.45pm on Friday. According to police he ran away from the shop but was hit by a car.

Despite the “considerable impact” he picked himself up and carried on running. He was last seen sprinting across the Meadows towards the railway station.

Several CCTV images of the suspect have been released. The man is described as early to mid-40s, white, with a hairy chest and black hair heavily slicked back. He smelled strongly of aftershave and had a southern accent.

The man wore a black pinstriped blazer over a distinct pale yellow T-shirt with a large motif across the chest, blue stonewashed jeans and brown smart shoes. He also wore dark rectangular sunglasses.

Police said he was likely to have been hurt after being hit by the car and would probably have bruising down the right side of his body.

Officers are looking through further CCTV footage for clearer pictures of the suspect.

If you saw the man or can identify him, call 101 and ask for Sgt 600 Rachel Blackwell or PC 1169 Steve Robinson at Stamford police station.
