Police have appealed for help after an historic church in Rutland was targeted by thieves.

The culprits stripped lead from the roof of St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Church Lane, Preston, between 7pm on Thursday and 7am on Friday.

The lead was removed in a wheelbarrow, which was left at the scene, and taken down a footpath which leads onto Riddington Road.

This is only the second incident of its kind since Church Watch was set up by Rutland beat officer PC Paul Le Pla in 2011 in response to an increase in lead thefts from churches in the county.

Police community support officer Martin Clarke, who is investigating the latest incident, said: “This was an appalling crime against a religious establishment which will end up costing a substantial amount of money to put right.

“If you saw anyone acting suspiciously in or around the building or Church Lane, Preston, we would urge you to get in touch.

“We would also like to speak to any scrap metals dealers who are approached by someone selling lead.

“If you have any suspicions we would still urge you to contact us.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 and ask for PCSO Martin Clarke.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
