Thousands of women joined the fight against cancer by taking part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Burghley House in Stamford on Sunday (June 1).

The grounds of Burghley Park near Stamford were transformed into a sea of pink as women of all shapes, sizes and ages, gathered to either run or walk a 5km or 10km route.

The day was hosted by Heart FM’s breakfast presenters Kev and Ros, who spoke about the importance of the day and led a minute’s reflection on why people were running.

Sonia Cullington from Wow Fitness led a warm-up and there were also stalls selling refreshments, as well as children’s games including a bouncy castle. A stall selling Race for Life memorabilia was particularly popular as the organisers were selling special edition Stamford T-shirts, listing the names of every participant.

Volunteers also sold pink gerberas to raise additional money for the charity.

Event manager for Race for Life Stamford, Gemma Turpin said that 3,311 women took part in this year’s event.

She said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day. In the run-up to the event, it was pouring with rain and I was really worried, but on the day it was just amazing. We couldn’t have asked for better weather.

“When you’re standing on the stage, all you can see is pink and there were lots of people in fancy dress and tutus which all adds to the incredible atmosphere.

“It’s obviously a very emotional day and when you see everyone’s back signs about why they’re running, you can really tell what it means. Everyone knows someone who’s been affected by cancer.”

Gemma thanked all the women for taking part.

She added: “We were really pleased with the numbers there as well. We exceeded our target and we are hoping to have raised £190,000 from the Stamford event which is incredible. We would urge everyone to make sure they get their sponsorship money into us as soon as possible. Even if it’s only a small amount, every penny goes to helping beat cancer sooner.”

Gemma also thanked the volunteers.

People can still sign up to take part in the Peterborough Race for Life 5k event, which will take place at Ferry Meadows in Peterboroughon Tuesday, 8 July, at 7.30pm.
