A former mayor of Stamford has died.

Coun John Binder, of Ryhall Road, Stamford, passed away peacefully in his home on January 23.

Coun Binder (LibDem), a former paramedic, served as mayor of Stamford from June 2011 until May 2012.

He presided over an exciting year for Stamford, which included visits from the Queen and the Olympic Torch.

Current mayor of Stamford, coun Bob Sandall (Ind), was coun Binder’s deputy during his term as mayor. The pair were elected onto the town council at the same time in 2003.

Coun Sandall said: “John was an honest, hard working lad for the town.

“He always had Stamford at heart and will be sadly missed by the council.

“As mayor he did very well.

“His death came as a bit of a shock to all of us.”

Coun Binder’s funeral will take place at St George’s Church in Stamford at 2pm on Monday.

Stamford Town Council held a minute’s silence at its meeting last night (Tuesday) and a £50 donation will be given by the council to Cancer Research UK in his memory.
