Tributes paid to young people killed in crash at Manton

TRIBUTES have been paid to two young people killed in an accident on the A6003 at Manton on Wednesday afternoon.

Kelly Bulmer, 17, and James Adamson, 23, both from Oakham, were passengers in a blue Ford Fiesta travelling towards Uppingham which crashed into a white transit van going in the other direction at about 5.30pm. They both died at the scene.

The driver of the Fiesta was taken to the University Hospital Coventry and yesterday he was said to be in a critical condition.

Kelly left Catmose College in Oakham last summer and was an A-level pupil at The King's School in Peterborough, where she had just received her AS-level results in chemistry, maths, physics and psychology.

Gary Longman, headteacher at The King's School, said: "Kelly joined us a year ago in the sixthform.

"She hadn't been with us for very long but nevertheless had settled in really well.

"She worked really hard and got all As and Bs in her AS-level results last week and was planning to apply to study pharmacy at university.

"She was a lively, friendly, modest and lovely young lady. She was involved in the wider life of the school and was involved in music and dance in our recent sixthform review.

"Clearly our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time of immeasurable sadness."

Kelly also worked part-time at Wilkinson in Oakham.

A spokesman for Wilkinson said: "This is tragic news and our thoughts and condolences go out to Kelly's family and friends. Kelly will be very much missed by all her colleagues."

James was a second chef at Greetham Valley Hotel, Golf and Conference Centre where he had worked for just under a year.

Robert Hinch, director at Greetham Valley, said: "We're all in shock.

"It is a great waste of a young life and a tragic loss of an up-and-coming young chef, work colleague and friend. James will be sorely missed by all at Greetham Valley."

Before working at Greetham, James worked as a second chef at the Blue Ball in Braunston where staff have paid their respects.

Owner Dominic Way said: "He was such a laid-back guy and was so easy to get on with. He was a well-rounded individual and there should be more people like him in this world.

"He worked at the Blue Ball for eight months and put his heart and soul into the place and helped us to build up the business. We're all devastated.

"Something needs to be done about that road because there are too many accidents along it."

James played for Rutland Rangers and had just started his second season with them.

Rutland County Council approved plans to lay a skid resistant surface on the A6003 at Manton because of the number of accidents there. Up until last week, in the past 10 years there were 18 reported accidents, which included one death.

received minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.

The driver of the transit van received minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

DC Rob Lapworth from the serious collision investigation unit, said: "We would like to speak to anyone who saw either of the vehicles in the moments leading up to the collision.

"Any information you have could be helpful to our investigation."

Anyone with information can contact police on 0116 222 2222 and follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer. When prompted key in identification number 1852.

The Mercury has opened books of condolence to Kelly Bulmer and James Adamson
