Two pubs could be on their way to Stamford

Stamford residents could soon be enjoying the comfort of two new pubs after plans for one were submitted and another approved.

JD Wetherspoon has applied to change the use of the Mercury office, in Sheep Market, to a public house.

The company wants to invest £1m transforming the ground floor of the building into a family-friendly pub.

The existing forecourt, which is currently used as a car park by Mercury staff, will be turned into an outdoor seating area and smoking shelter.

The Mercury is looking for new premises in Stamford.

The planning application contains floor plans for the proposed pub.

The ground floor comprises a bar area, kitchen, disabled and male toilet facilities, an enclosed refuse store, and staircases to the cellar and the first floor.

The first floor will house the female toilets, staff room, office, store room and plant room.

Access to the pub would be through the existing reception and most deliveries would be made from Bath Row.

According to the application the new pub would create 50 jobs.

The plans can be seen at on the South Kesteven District Council website.

Up to 36 further jobs could soon be created after Morrisons was granted outline planning permission to build a pub/restaurant on the site of the former Mirrlees Blackstone plant next to its supermarket in Uffington Road.

The firm’s plans to build a six-unit retail park were given the green light in December despite objections from Stamford Chamber and Commerce, which argued that town centre trade would be hit.

The chamber also objected to the pub/restaurant because of the potential impact extra traffic could have on Uffington Road.

Detailed plans for the new pub will need to be submitted before any work can begin.
