Two village GP surgeries facing closure

GP surgeries in Ketton and Gretton are facing closure after they were deemed "no longer fit for purpose".

The Uppingham Surgery, which runs the village branches as well as one in Barrowden, recently carried out a review of its services.

Ketton and Gretton were described as unfit for purpose, as defined by the NHS Leicestershire and Rutland Primary Care Trust.

The surgery said it had invested in staff and equipment and had to maintain a high-quality service with the resources available.

Uppingham is now proposing to close Ketton and Gretton branches. The closures would take place at the end of September, coinciding with the retirement of Dr Jeremy Crosthwaite from the practice.

Patient services would continue at Uppingham and Barrowden, with dispensing and visiting provided from these sites.

The Uppingham Surgery has pledged to hold a public consultation.

Ketton Parish Council chairman Glenis Southern said: "Ketton is the largest village in Rutland and councillors feel that it is extremely important to retain all the core services.

"There has been a surgery in Ketton certainly for 70-plus years and over recent years the parish council has made significant efforts to secure improved medical services, including trying to find a more central site for a surgery."

David Fursdon, of Southfield Road, Gretton, said many residents would struggle getting to Uppingham and Barrowden.

He said: "As a lifelong Gretton resident this would be a bad day for the village if we lost the doctors' surgery and I am certain a good case will be made for its retention and common sense prevails."

An Uppingham Surgery spokesman said: "As a practice, our vision is to continue to provide a high quality service and equitable access within the resources available to ensure that all of our patients have access to the clinical skills most appropriate to their needs."
