Uppingham listed in The Times’ best towns in Britain
Uppingham has been named the 18th best town in Britain in a national newspaper.
The Times described the town as a “hidden jewel” in its 30 Best Towns in Britain publication today (Wednesday).
The rankings were based in statistics including transport links, quality of schools, natural beauty, crime rates and property prices.
The report said: “The centre has stacks of antique shops and galleries, tea rooms and inns. Uppingham’s claim to fame is the public school. There is plenty to do, including windsurfing on Rutland Water and a theatre.”
Uppingham mayor David Casewell, who has lived in the town for 25 years, said: “I’m delighted and it’s great news but I’m not surprised.
“We have various planning authorities, including the town council, who work hard to keep the characteristics of the town.
“Uppingham is a town big enough to offer decent shops but is small enough for the community to care. Residents take pride in their town.”
In The Sunday Times, Oakham was listed as the 51st best place to live in Britain, while Stamford topped the list.
