Vandalised graffiti wall restored to former glory

A YOUTH club has restored its graffiti wall to its former glory after it was vandalised.

The Underground Youth Club in King's Cliffe carried out the repair work to the wall, which is on the end of the skate ramp at the new sports site in the village, on Saturday.

Youth club leader Katy Weeks is pleased to see the graffiti wall repaired and looking its best again.

She said: "It's great to see the wall back to how it was. We are really proud of our achievement and we hope the community enjoys it."

Club members created the wall in August last year with the help of graffiti artist James Mayle, but within two weeks the wall had been ruined by vandals.

Miss Weeks said the youth club was really disappointed and angry after the wall was vandalised, and that they put so much time into the initiative that the members wanted to repair the damage.

She said: "A lot of time and effort had gone into the original wall and it was really hurtful to see all that hard work undone.

"We had to save up for the special anti-graffiti varnish needed to give the wall some protection.

"We really hope it doesn't happen again but if it does, hopefully we can now clean it off."

It cost 350 to complete the repairs. This was paid for through a 200 grant from Northamptonshire County Council, donations and youth club funds.

Mr Mayle came back to help the youth club restore the wall.

The children who were originally involved with the mural on the wall went along at the weekend to help with the project.

Miss Weeks said new faces were also attracted to get stuck into the project.

She said: "It was great to see.

"The youth club really enjoyed learning techniques with the spray cans and some skills in lettering and using stencils.

"All the youngsters who took part put their handprints on the mural to make their mark on the wall."

Club member Jordan Davies, 13, added: "It was great fun working with James and it is good to have the wall repaired again now."
