Police are appealing for witnesses to a spate of thefts in the area and a series of attacks by vandals at an allotment site.

A greenhouse and shed windows were smashed in the allotments in Pillings Road, Oakham, in a series of attacks on Friday and Sunday night.

Paul Mann, 51, of Harrington Way, Oakham, was one of the tenants worst affected by the vandalism. His chickens were let out of their pen, and he said it was lucky they weren’t killed by a fox.

Mr Mann said: “The eggs have been also taken from the coop and thrown and smashed onto the floor, which is just absolutely senseless.”

Mr Mann called the police, who are investigating the damage and are also advising allotment tenants on how best to secure their plots.

The Oakham Home Garden and Allotment Society, which maintains the plots in Pillings Road, is also aware of the situation and will be passing on the news to members.

Mr Mann was keen to warn anyone with an allotment or a greenhouse in their own garden. Call police on 101.
