Video: 104 Military Working Dog Unit ready to deploy
Fifty soldiers from 104 Military Working Dog Unit at St George’s Barracks and their canines will deploy to Afghanistan in the next week.
About 40 soldiers from the unit in North Luffenham have already deployed within the next week and 50 more are preparing to go.
The dogs and their handlers have spent the last six months training and for many, it will be their first tour in Afghanistan.
Under the command of 1 Mechanised Brigade, the unit’s role will be training the Afghan Security Forces and ensuring the safety of British troops.
The unit will form part of the explosive ordnance disposal and search task force team. The dogs will carry out tasks including patrolling bases, searching vehicles at check points and going out on patrols on the front line.
Today (Friday), during a special demonstration, the dogs showed what they are capable of from searching a vehicle for an explosive device to taking down an enemy.
The soldiers also showed the kit they will be using as they carry out their tasks.
The Officer Commanding 104 Military Working Dog Unit, Major Ian Razzell said he was keen to ensure people in the area understood what the unit would be doing and their capabilities.
He said: “The soldiers and their handlers have been training in readiness for their deployments for the last 12 months.
“They have trained in a full range of environments so I am most confident they are ready for the challenges that lay ahead.
“I am proud of every single soldier.”
Last month, the unit held a families day to give the friends and relatives the chance to see what the soldiers will be doing.
