A recruitment session was held at the weekend to find skaters to join a roller derby team.

Mean Valley Roller Girls has been rebranded Mean Valley Roller Derby and met at Catmose Sports Centre in Oakham on Sunday to recruit new people.

For the first time, men were allowed to go and recruitment team member Gair Booth said about 15 people turned up, with an equal split of men and women.

She said: “Some of them have already signed up to the Facebook group so it is looking good.

“We have already got a good women’s team but men’s roller derby is getting more popular and we have had people asking us.

“We thought that’s something we would like to do because it means we can play co-ed. The prospects are quite exciting because we could have three teams.”

Roller derby is an all contact sport on skates and Mean Valley Roller Girls, which was founded in September 2011, trains in Oakham, Stamford and Peterborough.
