Video: Picking up litter to improve Stamford streets

Waiting for Video...

Two teenage friends have used their initiative to start a weekend litter pick in an attempt to clean up their community.

Instead of playing football or computer games like most boys their age, Eli Wade, 13, and his friend Charlie Tyler, 14, spent Saturday afternoon picking rubbish up from the Rutland Heights estate.

The friends, who both attend Casterton Business and Enterprise College, noticed the streets were cluttered with litter on their journey to and from school.

They both hope to one day join the police force and the police cadets and have been looking for voluntary work to help their applications.

Eli, of Charlock Drive, Stamford, and Charlie, who lives in Ketton, collected six bags of rubbish on Saturday.

They hope to continue every Saturday over the next few weeks.

Eli said: “We noticed the litter on the way to school and we thought it would be a good thing to get involved with clearing it up.

“The day was quite good actually and we have noticed a difference.

“A lot of people were stopping to say well done to us and some people were pipping their horns at us as they drove by.”

The pair, who also regularly play badminton and rugby together, cleared an alleyway on the Rutland Heights estate, as well as several roads.

Over the next few weeks, they hope to tidy the whole estate, as well as Casterton Road and the approach to the A1.

The boys’ parents are very proud of their efforts.

Eli’s mother Melanie Wade said: “They were both really keen to do something for the community so I wasn’t surprised when
they mentioned about the litter.

“The alleyway near us that’s used by dog walkers has been a real mess and it
really did make a big difference.

“I was very impressed with them both.”
