Visitors pour in to Burghley

THOUSANDS of people were flocking to Burghley this weekend for the horse trials, despite a grim weather forecast.

The event opened today with visitors pouring in. Among them was Jane May, 56, of Long Melford, Suffolk, who said: "It's just such a lovely event. We have come with two of our teenage granddaughters who ride themselves and are watching all the top competitors to pick up some tips."

Paul Marshall, 58, a bursar at a school in Kent, who lives at Wothorpe, was with his wife was at the event. "She has been coming here since 1961 and the rest of the family will be coming on Saturday," he said.

The forecast for the second day of dressage today is heavy rain, while tomorrow's cross country is likely to be held in heavy showers and the forecast for Sunday's show jumping is light rain.

At 3pm today in the main arena, Mandy Lay-cock will set off on an 87-mile sponsored bike ride to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire for Spinal Research. Mandy, who lives in Cheshire, will be joined later in the day by riders from the Burghley, Fitzwilliam and Cottes-more Pony Clubs, starting off from Bainton Village Green at 6pm. She is due to finish next Friday.

Mandy, whose brother Vernon owns Moore's estate agents, said: "It is a fun way to raise money and awareness."

To sponsor Mandy, call her on 0750 4069670.

A report in Friday's Mercury said that the cross country was on Sunday and showjumping on Saturday. We apologise for the error.
