Warning over bogus council tax phone calls

A COUNCIL is warning people not to give out their bank details to anyone who claims to be calling to arrange a council tax refund.

There have been reports of people claiming to work for South Kesteven District Council phoning people to say they have overpaid their council tax and promising to process a refund.

A spokesman said: "We would never phone a resident to ask for their bank details to issue a refund.

"If an overpayment had been made, and a refund is due, we would either refund the money via BACS if it had been paid by direct debit, or a cheque would be issued to the bill payer's address. We are working closely with the police on this matter."

Anyone who receives one of these calls is advised to hang up and if possible call 1471 and make a note of the number the call was made from. This should be reported to the council on 01476 40 60 80 and the police on 0300 111 0300.
