Weekend celebrates poet

AN awards body is helping a weekend of celebrations dedicated to the work of poet John Clare go ahead.

A set of five of Clare’s poems will be performed as part of a concert at Glinton Church tomorrow, followed on Sunday by a children’s workshop.

The awards body OCR, which has a range of qualifications including A Levels and GCSEs, has supported the event by providing the venue, concert fees, administration and publicity support.

The weekend will celebrate the life of John Clare, who grew up in Helpston and was one of the most important 19th century poets. Guests will include chairman of the John Clare Trust Barry Sheerman, MP for the Huddersfield area.

Other activities will include the opportunity to tour the recently restored John Clare cottage, Clare’s birthplace and home for 40 years.

The singing workshop will give children from John Clare and Peakirk-cum-Glinton primary schools the chance to sing together with an experience mixed-voice choir and will include songs and games linked to Clare’s life.

Events manager at the trust David Dykes said: “John Clare gave so much through his poetry and we hope this celebration weekend together with the newly re-opened cottage will promote and continue to promote literacy and creativity in the local area.”
