Were strange lights over Stamford a UFO?

A READER is asking for help identifying strange lights he spotted over Stamford.

Jack Winter, of Gresley Drive, Stamford, spotted the mysterious lights from his bedroom window at about 2.30am on Friday morning last week.

He said: "The lights came along from the north and headed south. They were going at about 20mph even though there was no wind and they weren't that high.

"I am completely stumped about what they could be and I just wanted to know if anyone else saw them or had any explanation as to what they could be."

Previous sightings of strange lights in the area have been put down to Chinese lanterns, which are paper lanterns with candles inside. They are often released on special occasions and can float for several miles before crashing.

Rutland County Council is warning of the dangers of using the lanterns in rural areas.

Portfolio holder for regulatory services which includes environmental services, Janine Rodger (Con) said the lanterns could cause damage to the countryside and harm livestock.

She is concerned they could start crop fires in the area.

Coun Rodger said: "If the lanterns get caught by a strong wind and suddenly come down in a field they have the potential to become very dangerous and I would urge residents to be mindful of this."
