Wheathill Farms of Thurlby fined after tractor ran over worker in Little Dalby
A firm has been fined more than £15,000 after a farm worker was run over by a poorly-maintained tractor leaving him with serious injuries.
Nigel Mould, 51, suffered a punctured lung, crushed pelvis, fractured ribs and a broken ankle and thumb after being run over by the tractor while working for Wheathill Farms, which is based in Thurlby.
The incident happened at The Drier, Little Dalby, near Melton Mowbray.
Mr Mould was wheelchair bound for several months after the August 1, 2011 incident.
Wheathill Farms admitted breaching a regulation for failing to maintain the tractor.
It was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £5,529 costs at a hearing at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
The Health and Safety Executive told how Mr Mould was standing outside the tractor cab, between the front and back wheels, to start it.
But the tractor, which had a faulty starter motor, had been left in gear so as soon as it fired up it moved forward, running over Mr Mould.
The tractor then carried on across the yard until a colleague was able to pull an emergency brake.
The court heard the tractor had had a faulty starter motor for at least two months, during which time staff were starting the engine by using a screwdriver or spanner to short the connection.
After the hearing Health and Safety Executive inspector Berian Price said: “This was an easily avoidable incident.”
