A primary school teaching assistant who downloaded child porn images from the internet was caught after being shopped by his wife, Lincoln Crown Court was told.

John Barnard’s behaviour caused his wife so much concern that she contacted the NSPCC after he talked about having sex with a child.

Andrew Scott, prosecuting, said police were informed and Barnard was arrested in April last year while on holiday in Skegness.

His home in Stamford was later searched and computer discs containing both child pornography and extreme pornography were found.

A total of 45 indecent images of children, 193 prohibited images and 125 extreme pornographic photos were found on the discs.

Checks on Barnard’s computer revealed he had also viewed a 100-page internet article about adults having sex with children.

Mr Scott said “He told the police he had been an apprentice teaching assistant at a primary school in Stamford. He is suspended from that position.

“When he was interviewed he denied ever looking at the images.”

Barnard, 49, formerly of Stamford but now living in Bramhall, Stockport, admitted two charges of making an indecent image of a child together with further charges of possession of a prohibited image of a child and possession of extreme pornography.

He was given a three year community order with a condition to complete a sex offender treatment programme.

He was also banned for life from working with children and prohibited from having unsupervised contact with any child under 16.

Judge Sean Morris told him at the hearing on Friday that sentencing guidelines meant any prison sentence he could impose would be very short and Barnard would very soon be released without having had any form of treatment.

“As a consequence of your actions you have lost your wife and you have only got yourself to blame for that,” he said.

David Eager, defending, said Barnard admitted having an interest in children and urged that he should receive a sentence that allowed him to receive treatment.
