Work is now under way on a supermarket giant’s 50,000 sq ft store in Oakham.

Sainsbury’s has confirmed that preliminary works have begun at the former Rutland County College site in Barleythorpe Road.

Trees are being removed and land is being cleared to make way for the development, which will create 250 jobs.

Planning permission was approved by Rutland County Council in March last year.

The company has not yet confirmed when building work will start.

Robert Oxley, regional development executive for Sainsbury’s, said: “The new Oakham store will be a welcome addition to the local community, creating up to 250 full and part-time jobs.

“It will offer a wide range of popular Sainsbury’s food products, a bakery and other fresh food counters, a customer café, a car park and a recycling centre.”

Sainsbury’s first bid to open a 30,000 sq ft store on an area of land to the west of Lands’ End Way was turned down in 2011.

County councillors voted against the development as it was too far from the town centre and the land had been designated for employment use.

However, since then discount food retailer Aldi has revealed it wants to open on store on that site.

The company said the development would create up to 40 full time and part time jobs.

Residents attended a public exhibition in November to find out more about the plans.

Aldi was hoping to submit a planning application soon.

Tesco’s plans to double the size of its store in South Street, Oakham, were given the go-ahead by Rutland County Council in March 2011.

Permission has been granted to extend to the south and west, taking up some of the existing car park and creating a mezzanine level.

In April last year, the supermarket said it was “considering its options” after Sainsbury’s plans were approved.

It has not yet confirmed if and when the development will go-ahead.
