Young poets pen their way to success

TALENTED young poets who have an extraordinary way with words celebrated National Poetry Day by reciting their poems at Oakham library.

More than 300 primary school pupils entered the competition to write a poem about Rutland and the cream of the crop, from Oakham, Brooke Hill and Southfield primary schools gave readings on Thursday last week.

The celebration had been organised by Oakham poet Gerald Botteley, 75, of Cricket Lawns, who also read some of his inspiring poetry to the finalists.

All nine prizewinners received a CD of children’s stories and overall winner Jordan Williams, 10, a pupil at Oakham Primary School, was presented with a book token by Mr Botteley.

Mr Botteley said: “I’ve always felt that poetry is an essential part of any person’s education and the standard of these poems was really quite extraordinary. It was such a success that we want to make it an annual event.”
